Mucommune researchers and collaborators report the development of fast-dissolving antibody tablet (FDAT) platform designed to provide rapid, convenient on-demand vaginal delivery of monoclonal antibodies for contraception and protection against sexually transmitted infections. The tablets disintegrated in less than 20 seconds and released functional antibodies within two minutes in fresh human cervicovaginal mucus, while retaining prolonged room temperature stability. In sheep studies, FDATs releasing the anti-sperm antibody MM008 completely eliminated all progressively motile human sperm within 2 minutes of semen instillation, while tablets releasing a Herpes virus neutralization antibody achieved uniform distribution in various parts of the vaginal tract and potent neutralized both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Repeated daily administration for seven days was well-tolerated, supporting further development of the FDAT platform as a discreet, on-demand approach for delivering antibody-based interventions for women’s reproductive health. The work is published in Journal of Controlled Release, the flagship journal for Controlled Release Society.  Mucommune has filed worldwide IP protection of the FDAT platform.
